Officer Moon was shot and killed with his own weapon as he and his partner questioned a mentally disturbed person. During the interview the suspect attacked the officer and gained control of Officer Moon's revolver and shot him in the head. He then shot and wounded the other officer. As Officer Moon lay in the street other citizens stole his hat and badge.

Officer Moon's murderer was sentenced to life in prison but was eligible for parole in 2003.  On February 11, 2003, the parole commission and reviewed his case.  The parole commission voted to suspend his parole at that time.  The suspect will be eligible for another parole hearing in September of 2007.

Officer Moon had served with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for 2 years and was survived by his wife, son, parents, and two sisters.
