The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office hosts an HR 218 qualification multiple times each year for JSO retirees/resigned officers only who meet the qualifications. If you are from another agency, we urge you to reach out to your previous agency to obtain an HR 218 card.
The qualification is designed to satisfy the requirements of the Law Enforcement Officer’s Safety Act of 2004, also known as HR 218, and is the Florida Department of Law Enforcement 38-round course. Certification is good for one year from the date of issuance.
Requirements
To participate in this course, the JSO retiree must meet the following requirements:
- Worked at least 10 years with a valid LEO certification
- Departed the agency in good standing
- Was authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution of or the incarceration of any person for any violation of law, and has statutory powers of arrest or apprehension
- Was authorized by the agency to carry a firearm.
- Was not the subject of any disciplinary action by the agency which could result in suspension or loss of law enforcement powers.
- Meet standards, if any, established by the agency which require the employee to regularly qualify in the use of a firearm
- Is not under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicating or hallucinatory drug or substance.
- Has not been officially found by a qualified medical professional employed by the agency to be unqualified for reasons relating to mental health
- Is not prohibited by federal law from receiving a firearm.
- Not a subject of Domestic Restraining Order
- Convicted of Domestic Assault
What to Bring to the Range
- Retired/Resigned officers must bring the following to the range:
- JSO ID Card
- Photo ID (Driver’s DL or State ID)
- Firearm - Revolvers are prohibited.
- Holster
- Three (3) Magazines
- Ammunition – Two (2) boxes of 50 rounds (100 rounds total)
- Hearing and Eye protection will be provided by the Range
2026 Class Dates
HR 218 Courses will take place on the following dates in 2026:
January 7, 2026 | April 1, 2026 | July 1, 2026 | October 7, 2026
Application Process
How to apply for course:
- Download the editable PDF application form for the desired course date and time.
- Fill out the form completely and legibly (if handwritten)
- Email the form to RetireeShoot@Jaxsheriff.org no later than the deadline listed on the application.
Each time slot is limited to 40 seats.
- The first 40 received applications will be given priority to the class and the remaining applications will be put on a waitlist.
- Courses are scheduled to take place at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11 a.m. Please indicate which time slot that you would like on the form before submitting the application.
- Once the application is received, Academy staff will conduct a background check to ensure that all requirements have been met.
- Approximately one month from the start date of the course, the Academy will email participants directly confirming their course acceptance for the requested date and time.
- If the participant does not receive an approval email to attend a course, participants should not respond to the range for the HR 218.
- Range staff will not be able to complete the required paperwork for people who have not completed the background process. Those who have not been sent approval notifications for the course will be turned away with the option to attend the next scheduled HR 218 retiree event.
All courses will be held at the JSO Firing Range located at 4727 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
