Community Service Officers (CSOs) are traditionally applicants who are looking towards law enforcement as a viable career path, and waiting to meet the requirements to apply to the Police Academy.

The CSO program allows the employee to gain valuable, practical experience, while earning a salary.

OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

Community Service Officers will gain experience by serving as a force multiplier and performing the following services:

  • Assisting with searches;
  • Investigating traffic crashes;
  • Preparing and issuing Uniform Traffic Citations for non-criminal violations;
  • Responding to and handling abandoned vehicles;
  • Assisting and transporting stranded motorists;
  • Performing traffic related duties;
  • Responding to illegally parked cars;
  • Handling substation duties;
  • Acting as Crossing Guards;
  • ​and handling special events where large crowds and traffic issues may cause a problem
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be at least 18-years of age
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in your state of residence
  • Applicants must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent (official transcripts required)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Be in good physical condition
  • Be of good moral character
  • TATTOOS:  
    • Tattoos are NOT permitted on the face or neck (if visible while wearing a collared shirt).
    • One visible tattoo on each hand, not to exceed one inch in measurement in all directions is permitted. 
    • One ring band tattoo is permitted on each hand.
    • Tattoos behind the ear cannot exceed one inch in measurement in all directions and cannot extend forward of the ear lobe. 
    • Any visible tattoo (e.g., on the hand, behind the ear) will not be permitted if deemed unacceptable.
  • NOT HAVE received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces
  • NOT HAVE been convicted of any felony
  • NOT HAVE been convicted of a misdemeanor involving false statement, perjury or domestic violence
  • IN ADDITION, the following areas may result in applicants being suspended from the hiring process: credit history including bankruptcy and collections; past drug use; inappropriate social media; driving history, work history; criminal activity and associations with known criminals; and inappropriate tattoos.

SALARY
  • While going to the Academy and during the Field Training Program: $40,952.38 annually ($1,575.09 bi-weekly)
  • After a probationary period: $43,000 annually ($1,653.84 bi-weekly)

*All salaries listed above are effective December 30, 2023. Paycheck calculations are based on 26 pay periods and before any taxes or deductions.  These base salaries increase in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements.
