Detectives, SWAT Arrest Man for Tuesday Murder

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, District 3 patrol officers responded to Saland Way near Beach Boulevard after a man, later identified as 47-year-old Charles Newsome, had been shot multiple times. Members from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) responded and
pronounced him dead at the scene.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Homicide Unit detectives began their investigation by interviewing witnesses and quickly identified the gunman as 24-year-old Saveon West. Detectives, with the help of JSO's SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals, located and detained West less than 24 hours after the shooting.

West was booked him into the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility (Duval County jail) on a murder charge.
