Dontay Taylor, 24, is now facing a murder charge after he shot his girlfriend’s father last month.
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, District 6 officers responded to a shooting on Ahmad Drive near West 45th Street. Officers found 50-year-old Derrick Griffin with multiple gunshot wounds. Members from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) rushed him to the hospital to receive medical care for his injuries.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit detectives immediately launched an investigation. They learned Taylor was in a relationship with Griffin’s daughter, and the couple was in a fight. Griffin tried to break up the fight; that’s when Taylor shot him multiple times.
With the help of the United States Marshals Task Force, JSO detectives arrested Taylor on Monday, August 25th, for Attempted Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
On Sunday, September 7th, Griffin passed away from the injuries he received in the shooting.
JSO's Homicide Unit detectives presented the case to the State Attorney’s Office and received an arrest warrant for Taylor for Griffin’s murder.
Taylor was already behind bars in the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility (Duval County jail) when detectives arrested him for murder. He’ll continue to be held in jail.
