Officers arrested a drunk driver who recklessly sped through the Ironman Jacksonville Race near Five Points over the weekend. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2026, officers along the cycling course spotted a vehicle driving recklessly into the pathway for runners and bicyclists and immediately did what they could to stop it. The driver refused to stop, forcing nearby DUI and Traffic Units to pursue the vehicle because it was a danger to the competitors and spectators in the area.
Officers’ cameras captured the multiple times the impaired driver nearly hit the runners and bicyclists. As the vehicle sped toward the crowded Riverside Park, DUI Officer Ernesto Valerio used a PIT maneuver to stop the impaired driver, as other officers rushed in to arrest him.
Darrell Simon, 62, was arrested on eight felony charges plus nearly a dozen misdemeanors and violations. This was Simon’s third DUI arrest in the last 10 years.
