Sheriff Presents Purple Heart Medal to Police Officer Jennifer Johnson
June 30, 2023
Earlier this year, Police Officer Jennifer Johnson received significant injuries in the line of duty. On Thursday, June 29, 2023, Sheriff T.K. Waters presented her with a "Purple Heart" medal at the agency's monthly awards ceremony.

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, Homicide Sergeant Steve Rudlaff, who was also recognized at the ceremony, was driving in his unmarked police car in the 4200 block of Philips Highway when he observed Officer Jennifer Johnson speaking to a suspect at the roadside. As Officer Johnson attempted to detain the suspect as part of a theft investigation, he immediately began striking her in the face, knocking her to the ground. The suspect got on top of her and continued to strike her to the point she lost consciousness. He also tossed her radio away from her, depriving her of the ability to call for assistance.

Police Sergeant Rudlaff, seeing this transpire, immediately activated his emergency equipment and drove across the center median, and made his way to Officer Johnson. Upon seeing Sergeant Rudlaff approach, the suspect stopped striking Officer Johnson and fled on foot. Sergeant Rudlaff exited his police vehicle and chased the suspect down, detaining the suspect until additional units arrived.

During the presentation Sheriff Waters said, “Jennifer, we know your road to recovery has not been easy and we are so grateful for your strength, courage, and positive attitude. We cannot wait to have you back at work!”

Also, at the the awards ceremony, Sheriff Waters recognized Police Sergeant Steve Rudlaff with the agency's June 2023 "Police Supervisor of the Month" award for his actions that day. "Steve, you were in the right place at the right time that day and we are all so thankful," said Sheriff Waters.
