Safety Tips for Buying or Selling on Online Marketplaces
June 05, 2026
In the past nine weeks, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has responded to 12 dirt bike thefts, all following a similar pattern. A buyer reaches out on Facebook Marketplace, offering to buy the bike. When the seller and buyer meet, the buyer asks to take a test drive and
then drives off with the bike before actually paying.
  • If the buyer asks to test drive the dirt bike without giving you money first, say "no."
  • Do not meet in a secluded location. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office headquarters in downtown Jacksonville and JSO’s six substations conveniently located throughout the city provides multiple locations where citizens can conduct an exchange of legal merchandise. If they don’t want to meet at a substation, that’s a red flag.
  • Take screenshots of the messages and take a photo of the person when you meet up. If something happens, you now have evidence you can bring directly to us.
This advice doesn’t just apply to dirt bikes. Shop safely, and if something ever goes wrong during an online sale, police are just a call away.
