Officers and Citizen Recognized for Rescuing Three Drowning Children
November 13, 2025
It was a crowded day at Huguenot Park on Mother’s Day weekend 2025 when Officers Shawn Crocker and Tyler Sweeney heard cries for help. Three young children were drowning.

The officers immediately jumped into action. Officer Sweeney pulled off his gear and dove into the water, rescuing a young boy. Officer Crocker stayed on shore, providing medical aid to a small boy and girl on shore. Thankfully, rescue units were nearby and arrived quickly to the beach to take the children to the hospital. All three made a full recovery.

Last month, both officers were presented with a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office "Lifesaving Medal" recognizing their efforts that day.

This story wouldn’t have the happy ending it has without the quick thinking of Steve Insco, a regular at Huguenot Park. He helped rescue two of the children. Insco was also recognized at the awards ceremony last month where he received the agency's "Certificate of Appreciation," presented to citizens in the community for going above and beyond to help law enforcement.

It might not be beach weather, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a risk for drowning. No matter what time of year, please be careful around the water. Rip currents and rough surf can be deadly. If there is ever any doubt, stay out of the water.
