A few weeks ago, District 1 Patrol Officer James Kahre had just 30 minutes left in his overnight shift when he noticed a car parked the wrong way in an intersection. Believing the vehicle might be disabled, Officer Kahre stopped to check on the driver.
Inside was an elderly man who appeared disoriented. He thought he was still in his hometown of Savannah. His gas tank was nearly empty, and he wasn’t sure how he’d make it home.
Officer Kahre began working to identify the man and contact his family. He soon reached the man’s wife, who said her husband had left earlier that evening and never returned. She was minutes away from reporting him missing when Officer Kahre called.
While they waited, Officer Kahre invited the man to sit in his patrol car to stay comfortable and preserve the little fuel he had left. Not long after, the man’s wife arrived and was able to take him home safely to Savannah.
Officer Kahre’s supervisor commended his compassion and attention to detail, noting that while it would’ve been easy to drive past the stopped vehicle, Officer Kahre chose instead to stay late and help a Vietnam Veteran find his way home.
