Last month, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) shared a photo of a man who was caught on camera near Southpoint Drive South wearing a Puerto Rico shirt and holding an unlit cigarette while attempting to break into an ATM. He used a butane lighter to try and melt the security
camera.
Thanks to tips received from the community through
JSO's Unsolved Crimes page, detectives identified him as Neftali Mercado, 42. On Monday, October 6, 2025, Mercado was taken into custody.
