Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Homicide detectives arrested the second suspect in a deadly motel shooting after a five-month investigation.
On Friday, May 29, 2026, District 6 patrol officers responded to a motel room on Golfair Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Giavonathan Butler with a gunshot wound. Sadly, he passed away from his injury.
Two days later, the JSO SWAT Team took 25-year-old Alfred Jones III into custody. Evidence at the scene proved Jones did not act alone, and the investigation into the case continued. Detectives identified 21-year-old Dequan McDonald as the second gunman.
In July, McDonald was arrested for a string of vehicle burglaries and thefts in the Cobblestone area of Jacksonville. He has been in the Duval County jail since then, awaiting trial for those charges.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Homicide detectives received a warrant for McDonald’s arrest in Butler’s murder. McDonald continues to be held in the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility (Duval County jail).
