August is Overdose Awareness Month and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Overdose Death Investigations Unit works every day to hold those responsible for pushing deadly drugs on Jacksonville's streets accountable for their actions.
In February 2025, detectives responded to an overdose death. Based on the evidence, detectives identified 42-year-old Jacob Johnson as the suspect. Ultimately, an arrest warrant was issued for Johnson and he was taken into custody in June.
Johnson is in the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility (Duval County jail), facing a Manslaughter charge for the overdose death earlier in the year as well as several drug charges.
This is just one example of the work that JSO's Overdose Death Investigations Unit does every single day. From January - June 2025, 52 people were arrested for overdose deaths. That’s 13 more than JSO detectives arrested in the same time frame last year. JSO officers have responded to less overdoses in that same six-month time frame (157 in 2025 compared to 195 in 2024). Less people are dying from overdoses in Jacksonville, but detectives are making sure every life lost gets the justice they deserve.
