Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Mark Romano shared details about an officer-involved shooting that happened on Broxton Bay Drive on the Northside on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Around 6 p.m., District 6 patrol officers responded to an apartment complex after reports that someone was shooting a gun in the complex. When officers arrived, they spoke to a woman who reported hearing the gunshots. While the officers spoke to this woman, six gunshots went off. Officers went to figure out where the shots were coming from.
The suspect came out from a dark area near the officers. The officers asked him if he had been shooting, and the suspect did not respond. The officers told the suspect to stop and show his hands, but the suspect did not comply. The suspect walked up the apartment complex stairs to the second story; the officers followed him and continued to tell him to stop and show his hands.
Once the suspect reached the second story, he pulled a gun from his right pocket. Officers told him to put the gun down, but the suspect did not listen. The suspect began to turn toward the officers, and two officers fired shots.
The suspect was taken into custody and received medical aid before JFRD transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The suspect's name was not released during the stand-up at the scene as his identification had not been confirmed.
Due to Marsy's Law, the officers' names were not released at the scene.
This is the 16th officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene conducting an independent investigation. Once that investigation is completed, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation into the use of force
