Director Edwin Cayenne and Chief Michael Paul shared the details about the officer-involved shooting off West Beaver Street.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, a patrol sergeant was sitting in his vehicle at the stop station when the suspect approached him. The sergeant exited his vehicle and had a brief conversation with the suspect. The suspect then pulled out a firearm and fired one shot at the sergeant. The bullet missed the sergeant, but hit the stop station where other officers were working. The sergeant pulled his firearm out and shot the suspect. The suspect dropped to the ground. He was taken to a local hospital where he passed away from his injuries.
The man has been identified as 45-year-old Christopher Ford.
Due to changes in Marsy’s Law, the officer’s name is not being released at this time.
This is the 14th officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene conducting an independent investigation. Once that investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
