Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved shooting that happened on Westdale Drive near Pine Bluff Drive on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Around 10:45 p.m., District 2 patrol officers were dispatched to a battery with injuries at a home in the 1100 block of Westdale Drive. The fight was between a man and woman. As the officer approached the house, the man met her outside and told her he had been in an argument with his girlfriend. He also told the officer his girlfriend was armed with a knife. As the officer turned toward the home, the female suspect walked outside carrying multiple items in her hands. The officer told her to drop everything in her hands. While the female did put some items on the ground, she still held a large kitchen knife. The officer gave the suspect loud, verbal commands to drop the knife. Instead, she advanced toward the officer, and the officer fired a shot. The suspect was struck and fell to the ground, but did not drop the knife. She tried to get up and again attempted to advance toward the officer, so the officer fired a second shot. A backup officer arrived on scene, who also gave loud, verbal commands to drop the knife.
The suspect eventually put the knife down. She was transported to a local hospital where she died. The suspect is a 22-year-old white female. Her name is not being released currently due to pending next of kin notifications. Due to changes in Marsy’s Law, the officer’s name is not being released at this time.
This is the 12th officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene conducting an independent investigation. Once that investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation into the use of force.
