Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved shooting that happened on Kline Road East on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
Around 6 p.m., District 2 patrol officers responded to an armed domestic dispute call. Upon arrival, the suspect’s grandparents met with officers. They said their adult grandchild, who lives behind the home, had threatened them with a firearm during a confrontation. Officers were given permission to enter the backyard where the suspect was currently inside of the shed.
Officers tried calling the suspect, 22-year-old Kaiyan Alex Atkinson, out of the structure. Atkinson eventually exited the shed but did not comply with officers’ commands. Atkinson then ran toward the front of the house. With guns drawn, officers commanded the suspect to show her hands. Atkinson then reached inside of her waistband. An officer then deployed his TASER, striking her. Shortly after, she pulled a firearm from her waistband and fired one shot toward police. Two officers returned fire, striking Atkinson multiple times. Officers disarmed Atkinson and performed CPR and lifesaving measures until the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department arrived and transported her to a local hospital, where she is in critical condition.
The officers who fired the shots are Officer J. Lenn and Officer N. Iezzi. The officer who deployed his TASER is Officer J. Kernodle. No officers were injured in the incident.
This is the 11th officer-involved-shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene conducting an independent investigation. Once that investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation into the use of force.
