Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved shooting. This happened on San Pablo Road around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, District 2 patrol officers responded to a reported armed, suicidal individual. The family of the individual informed officers he was inside the vehicle and possibly armed. The officers attempted to make contact for several hours.
The SWAT team was called and arrived around 2:30 p.m. Eventually, the SWAT team was able to make contact with the individual, but he continued to refuse to exit the vehicle.
At 7:20 p.m., the SWAT team introduced gas into the individual’s vehicle. He tried to get out of his car through a window with a large knife in one hand and a firearm in the other. The officers ordered him to drop the weapons multiple times. He did not comply. The officers fired multiple shots, striking him. He was taken to a local hospital where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.
The suspect is Samuel Waters Jr., a 37-year-old white man. He has a criminal history in Florida, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
The officers who fired the shots are all on the SWAT team: Officer J. Vickers, Officer M. White, Sergeant B. Nauss, Officer J. Price, Officer T. Hensley, and Officer J. Ingham. No officers were injured in the incident.
This is the ninth officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
