Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved shooting that happened on Rigel Road around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026.
On Monday night, District 2 patrol officers responded to an armed criminal mischief call. The suspect, a Black male in his 30s, had kicked in the doors of four occupied residences. He was carrying a handgun.
The suspect made contact with several residents, made concerning statements, then exited the homes.
When officers arrived and were speaking with the victims, the suspect approached officers and pointed the handgun at them. They ordered the man to drop the gun, he did not and that is when the officers shot at him. The suspect died from his injuries.
The suspect has been identified, but his name was not released during the briefing at the scene as next of kin notification is pending. He was a convicted felon in both Florida and Texas.
The officers who fired the shots are Officer R. Vazquez, Officer G. Comayagua, Officer J. Pallint, and Officer A. Schmidt. No officers were injured in the incident.
This is the eighth officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
