Around 10:10 p.m. Thursday night, District 6 patrol officers responded to a domestic violence call involving an armed suspect. The man was armed with a knife and had made threats about killing both himself and his wife.
The suspect left the scene before officer arrived. Once on scene, officers spoke with the victim and made contact with the suspect via phone. While on the phone with officers, the suspect said he would not be going back to prison and threatened that they would have to kill him.
The victim told officers the suspect may have gone to a family member’s home in District 5. Officers coordinated their efforts and responded to the home on Fox Tail Lane, where they located the vehicle the suspect was reported to be driving.
Officers made contact with the man in the car and after a brief conversation, they asked him to exit the vehicle. As he was exiting the vehicle, he grabbed a large knife. The suspect approached officers with the knife and threatened to have them shoot him. Officers attempted to create space between themselves and the man, but he continued to advance towards them, still holding the knife. Officers shot at the man several times.
Officers began life-saving measures on the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
The suspect has been identified as 62-year-old Jose Cabrera.
The officers who fired the shots are Officer W. Morris, Officer G. Griffis, and Officer R. Rhoden.
No officers were injured in the incident.
This is the fifth officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
