Officer-Involved Shooting in Oceanway Area
February 11, 2026
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved shooting. This happened on Kaleel Road around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

On Tuesday evening, while in covert vehicles, Patrol Task Force officers located a known stolen vehicle near 61st Street and Main Street. The suspect was inside the stolen vehicle.

Two weeks prior to this incident, the same suspect was seen in the same stolen vehicle. The suspect fled during that incident; officers in that incident confirmed the suspect was armed with a firearm at that time.

The covert units called for marked patrol cars to follow the stolen vehicle. The officers continued to follow the stolen vehicle to Kaleel Road. At that point, the suspect blacked out the stolen vehicle and pulled into a driveway.

The suspect exited the stolen vehicle and ran away from the car. Officers chased after him. Sergeant M. Howell deployed his TASER twice at the subject; it is unknown at this time if the probes made contact with the suspect.

After the TASER deployment, the suspect pulled out a handgun. That’s when Sergeant Howell and Officer. M. Higginbotham fired multiple shots.

The suspect died at the scene. The next of kin notification has not been made yet, so JSO is not identifying the suspect at this time.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
