Around 6:45 p.m. Sunday evening, officers responded to the area for an armed drug complaint. Task force officers were in an unmarked vehicle to see if they could view any illegal activity in the area.
A short time after they arrived, a man came from behind the unmarked vehicle and walked to the front the vehicle. The man the pointed a gun at the officers. The officers shot the suspect several times from inside of the vehicle. The suspect began running and shooting his gun at the officers. The officers got out of the car and chased the suspect for about two blocks. The officers fired more shots at the suspect at this time.
During the chase, the suspect hid behind nearby vehicles. The officers gave him verbal commands to come out from behind the vehicles, and the suspect crawled out.
The officers provided medical aid to the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment for his gunshot wounds.
The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Samuel Cook. Cook is a convicted felon.
This is the third officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officers who fired the shots are Officer R. Mills and Officer S. Lyons.
The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
