Around 8:40 p.m. Monday evening, officers responded to the area for a reported assault with shots fired. Neighbors had called 9-1-1, reporting hearing a gunshot in the area. Neighbors walked outside to see what happened, and they saw a man in a garage holding a rifle.
Officers arrived and approached the house, telling the suspect to drop the rifle and come to the officers. The suspect followed the police orders, and officers took him into custody.
While officers were taking the suspect into custody, the suspect’s father picked up the rifle his son had been holding and pointed it at the officers. Three officers shot at the suspect’s father, who then went back into the house.
The SWAT Team was called to the scene, and a three-hour standoff took place. At one point, gas was used, and the suspect’s father exited the house onto the back porch where he was taken into custody. He had a gunshot wound; he received medical care at the scene before he was transported to the hospital.
The suspect’s father has been identified as 68-year-old Offero Manalon.
This is the second officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officers who fired the shots are Officer M. Ross, Officer Q. Kincaid, and Officer G. Hernandez.
The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
