Critical Incident Briefing Released for Officer-Involved Shooting in Atlantic Boulevard Estates Area
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Creeks Ridge Road on Monday, January 5, 2026. The details below are preliminary.
The incident resulted in the injury of 68-year-old Ofero Manalon. Manalon is a convicted felon who is prohibited from owning firearms. Based on his actions before and during this critical incident, Manalon was arrested for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
On the evening of January 5th, a resident who lived on Creeks Ridge Road heard a gunshot close to his home. Believing his home had been hit by gunfire, he walked outside and saw Sherwin Manalon inside the garage of a nearby house, holding a rifle. The resident called police.
Officers arrived on scene and tactically approached the home. The garage door was partially open, and officers could see Sherwin Manalon inside the garage with the rifle. Officers yelled at Sherwin Manalon to drop the rifle and exit the garage; he complied with the orders. While officers handcuffed Sherwin Manalon, Ofero Manalon, Sherwin’s father, appeared in the garage. Ofero Manalon picked up the rifle and pointed it at the officers. Officers G. Hernandez, M. Ross, and Q. Kincaid fired their JSO-approved handgun and rifles, striking Ofero who went back into the house.
The JSO SWAT Team was called to the house as Ofero Manalon became an armed suspect barricaded inside the home when he retreated within the residence. After several hours of a standoff, the SWAT Team deployed gas inside the home. Ofero Manalon moved to the back porch, where officers deployed a trained canine to take him into custody. Paramedics who were already staged at the scene took him to the hospital. At the time of filming this critical incident briefing, Manalon was in stable condition.
The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. JSO will then conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. Conclusions remain pending.
