Critical Incident Briefing Release for Officer-Involved Shooting on January 5th in Bartram Park Area
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Egrets Nest Drive on Monday, January 5, 2026. The details below are preliminary.
The incident resulted in the death of 34-year-old Daniel Rodriguez. Had Rodriguez survived his injuries, he would have been arrested for Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm.
On the evening of the critical incident, several residents of an apartment complex on Egrets Nest Drive observed Rodriguez in a heated argument with his wife. Residents also observed Rodriguez holding a handgun at his side. This information was relayed to the responding officers.
Officers J. Roderick and J. Milam spoke with Rodriguez’s wife in the parking lot; she confirmed she had been arguing with her husband. While the officers were speaking with Rodriguez’s wife, Rodriguez emerged near the residence. The two officers approached Rodriguez and asked if he was armed. Rodriguez lifted his shirt and pulled out a firearm from his waistband. The two officers grabbed Rodriguez and struggled with him for the firearm, which was a .40 caliber handgun. Rodriguez fired one round from his firearm. The two officers then fired their JSO-assigned firearms at Rodriguez.
Backup officers arrived to the scene and removed the handgun from Rodriguez’s hand. Then, officers provided emergency medical aid until the paramedics arrived to take Rodriguez to the hospital, where he passed away. Another handgun was found on Rodriguez’s person at the hospital.
The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted Rodriguez’s autopsy. The examining pathologist discovered Rodriguez had a contact gunshot wound under his jaw. The bullet from this fatal shot, which was a .40 caliber projectile, was discovered in his brain. Officers Milam and Roderick both had 9mm handguns and ammunition.
The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. JSO will then conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. Conclusions remain pending.
