Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved shooting. This happened on Bradd Avenue off Dunn Avenue around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
The incident began around 10 p.m. when District 5 patrol officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance on Bradd Avenue. The suspect, 31-year-old Corey Sweeney, got into an argument with his mother. At one point during the argument, Sweeney pulled out a knife and threatened to cut her. The mother was able to get out of the house during the argument, at which point Sweeney locked her out. Officers continued to negotiate with Sweeney, trying to get him to exit the house with nothing in his hands. Sweeney at one point saw the officers through the window and smashed the glass, injuring an officer. Sweeney also told officers he had a shotgun and was going to shoot.
Officers continued to negotiate with Sweeney for about four hours. Sweeney then tried to come out of the house, holding an object in his hand and rearing back to throw it. Two officers fired shots, hitting Sweeney. Other officers immediately provided medical aid; rescue transported him to a local hospital. Sweeney is expected to recover from his injury.
This is the 16th officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The two officers who fired shots are Officers Christopher Bush and Keith Miller.
The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
