Critical Incident Briefing for Officer-Involved Shooting from December 16th
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved-shooting that occurred on Bradd Avenue on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The details below are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.
The incident resulted in the injury of 31-year-old Cory Sweeney. At the time of filming, Sweeney was in stable condition at an area hospital. Due to his actions before and during this critical incident, Sweeney was arrested for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Tampering with a Witness, Aggravated Assault, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Domestic Battery.
At 9:53 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2025, Sweeney’s mother called 9-1-1, reporting he was threatening her. During the call, the dispatcher could hear Sweeney making verbal threats before the call was abruptly disconnected. When the dispatcher called the number back, Sweeney answered and made threats to the dispatcher. In response to the call, patrol officers responded to Sweeney’s mother’s house on Bradd Avenue.
When officers arrived, the mother had already exited the house. She told officers Sweeney made multiple threats to stab and kill her, even holding a knife to her face. Officers positioned themselves around the house, attempting to speak with Sweeney to get him to exit the house. At one point, officers attempted to look inside the window to determine where Sweeney was inside the house. Then, Sweeney began smashing the windows. One of the officers who was positioned outside the window was injured by the broken glass.
Officers continued to make repeated, loud commands for Sweeney to exit the house over an approximately four-hour period. Sweeney yelled multiple times he would injure or kill the officers. During this time, Sweeney came out of the house, outfitted in a football helmet and armed with a hammer, then returned inside.
Sweeney remained barricaded and armed inside the home, so patrol officers requested the JSO SWAT Team’s assistance. While SWAT officers began arranging themselves on scene, patrol officers continued to negotiate with Sweeney, asking him to exit the house with nothing in his hands. Sweeney refused to comply.
At 3:09 a.m., Sweeney exited the house armed with a large unknown object. Sweeney reared back as if he were going to throw the item at the officers. Officers K. Miller and C. Bush simultaneously fired their JSO-approved rifles at Sweeney, striking him. Sweeney went back into the house before exiting a few minutes later. Once he was taken into police custody, Sweeney received medical treatment before being transported to a local hospital.
The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. Once that is complete, JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. All findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review. Conclusions remain pending.
