Officer-Involved Shooting in the Mayport Area
August 26, 2025
Around 6 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2025, a couple fishing at a local boat ramp near the scene heard gunshots. The couple (a husband and wife) saw the suspect shooting a rifle into the water; the suspect then pointed the rifle at the couple. The interaction between the couple and
suspect continued. At one point, the suspect again pointed the rifle at the husband; they then fought over the gun and the husband was able to get the rifle from the suspect’s hand, tossing it into the water.

The couple left the boat ramp in their vehicle when they saw the suspect driving toward them head on in his vehicle. The couple was able to avoid getting hit. The suspect then hit another vehicle on Mayport Road before coming to a final rest near some bushes off Mayport Road.

Officers arrived on scene and began speaking to the suspect, trying to get him out of the vehicle. Officers spent about 90 minutes speaking to the suspect, giving verbal commands to exit the vehicle. At one point, the suspect reached into a rifle case; that’s when the officers fired shots.

The suspect did not survive. He was a white 37-year-old man.

This is the 14th officer-involved-shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officers involved in the shooting are A. Yanuzzi, A. Boyster, D. Sapp, T. Robinson, A. Henning, Z. Slatowski, M. Ross, P. Rickertsen, and C. Soucek . None of the officers involved received any injuries in this incident.

The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
