JSO Releases Critical Incident Briefing for the Officer-Involved Shooting on August 25th
September 12, 2025
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved-shooting that occurred on Dutton Island Road East on Monday, August 25, 2025. The details below are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.

The incident resulted in the death of 37-year-old Cale Tyler Gilbert.

At 6 p.m., officers were called to Dutton Island Preserve to respond to a shooting. A husband and wife were fishing from the dock when they heard Gilbert shooting a rifle into the water. When the husband approached Gilbert to tell him to stop firing his weapon, Gilbert pointed the rifle, firing shots near the man’s feet. The couple tried to leave, but Gilbert approached, still armed, and asked for a drink. The woman handed him one while her husband tackled Gilbert, disarmed him, and threw the rifle into the water.

The husband and wife got into their truck to leave. As the couple drove away, Gilbert followed, sideswiped their truck, then crashed into a Jeep at Dutton Island Road and Mayport Road before striking a tree.

Officer Soucek arrived first and gave verbal commands for Gilbert to exit. Additional officers joined and began to give directions to Gilbert. Gilbert remained barricaded in his truck for an hour and a half. Officers used the public address system to speak to Gilbert during that hour and a half, encouraging him to peacefully exit his car.

At 7:34 p.m., officers saw Gilbert reach into his rifle case. Officers Boyster, Rickertson, Yanuzzi, Sapp, Robinson, Soucek, Henning, Ross, and Slatowski, all simultaneously fired, striking Gilbert.  Gilbert died from his injuries.

The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers' actions. Once that is complete, JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. Then, a Response to Resistance Board will convene, and the findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review. JSO is releasing this in the interest of transparency. Conclusions on the incident remain pending.
