Around 7 a.m., on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, officers responded to a call involving a man with mental health concerns. Officers learned the suspect, a 30-year-old Black male, had tried to light a home on East 16th Street on fire. Officers also learned he was armed with a knife.
The suspect ran from the area.
A canine officer spotted the suspect walking along East 25th Street near Buckman Street. The officer had a description of the suspect and called the suspect by name. The officer wanted the suspect to stop or the officer would release the canine. The suspect did not comply and began to run away from the officer while holding his knife [see image]. The officer followed after him. The officer got out of his vehicle with his conducted energy weapon (CEW), or Taser. The suspect then threatened the officer, pushing the knife out towards the officer twice. The officer dropped his Taser, pulled out his pistol, and shot the suspect.
Additional officers quickly arrived, getting the knife out of the suspect’s hand and rendering emergency medical aid. The suspect did not survive. The suspect's identity was not released during the initial briefing as next of kin notification had not been made yet.
