JSO Releases Critical Incident Briefing for Officer-Involved Shooting on May 14th
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 on Lenox Avenue. The details are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.
This incident resulted in the death of 44-year-old Calixto Benvenutti.
Around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, patrol officers responded to the scene after receiving multiple calls that a man—later identified as Benvenutti—was firing a gun. Officers saw Benvenutti standing on the front porch of a trailer, holding a gun. Benvenutti immediately went inside the trailer. The officers told him multiple times to disarm and come outside the trailer. Benvenutti refused to comply.
After an arrest warrant was issued, SWAT officers arrived and continued telling Benvenutti to exit the trailer unarmed. At one point, Benvenutti exited the trailer with the gun, fired it once into the ground, and went back inside the trailer. Benvenutti continued his barricade standoff with SWAT officers into the early morning hours of May 14th.
Eventually, Benvenutti came out, picked up a large stick, and walked toward another trailer. SWAT Detectives McCranie and Lyons approached him on foot, while Detective Crews remained in an armored vehicle. Benvenutti dropped the stick, drew a concealed gun from his waistband, and moved toward the trailer while armed. All three SWAT officers fired their rifles, striking him. Officers then took him into custody and rendered emergency medical aid. The paramedics pronounced Benvenutti dead at the scene.
The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. Once that is complete, JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. Then, a Response to Resistance Board will convene, and the findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review. JSO is releasing this in the interest of transparency. Conclusions remain pending.
