Starting Monday, December 1, 2025, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct high visibility enforcement details throughout Duval County to combat the dangers experienced by both bicyclists and pedestrians.
The high visibility traffic enforcements will run through the beginning of May 2026. They will be held in several high traffic areas across the city.
Enforcement efforts will focus on educating drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. However, violations may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.
Since the start of 2025, there have been 407 traffic crashes involving either a bicyclist or pedestrian; 40 of those crashes resulted in a fatality. By November 2024, there were 425 crashes involving either a bicyclist or pedestrian; 47 were fatal.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office would like to remind bicyclists and pedestrians of several ways to stay safe on the roadways:
- Stay visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at dawn, dusk or night. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing or entering intersections.
- Be predictable: Follow traffic signals, use crosswalks or bike lanes when available, and avoid sudden movements that drivers can’t anticipate.
- Stay alert: Keep heads up. Avoid distractions like texting or wearing headphones that block surrounding sounds.
- Look before crossing: Always scan for turning vehicles, check both directions, and confirm drivers see you.
- Use caution around driveways: Vehicles may pull out quickly. Slow down, look for movement and be prepared to come to a stop.
- Be defensive: Assume drivers may not see you; give yourself time and space in case another driver behaves unpredictably.
The $113,520 traffic enforcement contract funding these efforts was awarded by the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
