About the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Internship Program

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office offers unpaid internship opportunities to undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in the law enforcement field. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the operations and responsibilities within the sheriff's office while gaining hands-on experience outside of the classroom.
 

Qualifications

To be eligible for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Internship Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Be pursuing a degree in criminal justice or a closely related field
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Be eligible to receive academic credit for the internship through their college or university
  • Be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week for the duration of the internship
  • Be able to pass a nationwide criminal history screening assessment
  • Be able to pass a drug test
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving false statements, perjury, or domestic violence
In addition, applicants may be suspended from the selection process based on the following factors:
  • Credit history (including bankruptcy or collections)
  • Past drug use
  • Inappropriate social media activity
  • Driving history
  • Work history
  • Criminal activity or associations with known criminals
  • Inappropriate tattoos
Final selection decisions are made by members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Department of Personnel and Professional Standards.
 

Available Assignments

Interns will have the opportunity to observe and learn about various departmental operations through assignments in the areas listed below. Divisions classified as high-risk or those that could compromise the agency’s mission are not available for intern placement.
  • Communications Section
  • Department of Corrections
  • Patrol Division
  • Major Case Section
  • Crime Scene Unit
  • Traffic Enforcement
  • Specialized Patrol Shadow Day (including the Canine Unit, Mounted Unit, and other specialized units)
  • Recruitment and Selection Unit

Application Process

  • Applicants must complete and submit the internship application in full.
  • Any false or undisclosed information may result in automatic disqualification..
  • All qualified applicants are required to participate in a phone interview as part of the selection process.
  • Applicants will be notified via email of their progress throughout the application process.

Required Paperwork

Intern assignments will be determined after the completion of the following documents:
  • Personal History Form
  • Fingerprint Certificate and actual fingerprints
  • Office of the Sheriff Intern Schedule
  • Intern Liability Release Form
