Sheriff Mike Williams

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Sheriff Williams is married and is raising a family of three sons here.
Sheriff Williams served in the Air National Guard, and began his successful career at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 1991.
 
As a young patrol officer he rode “a beat” in downtown Jacksonville, where he developed relationships with citizens and business leaders, believing early in his professional life that connecting with citizens was very important to the success of what Agency is trying to accomplish: reducing and solving crime together with citizens who are engaged with their officers.
 
He quickly developed a reputation as a police officer who cares about people and likes to work with them to solve their public safety issues.
 
Sheriff Williams earned his way up the ranks to the appointed position of Director of Investigations and Homeland Security. Through his leadership, strengthening partnerships with federal law enforcement agencies, JSO deploys some of the most advanced technology available in the battle against domestic terrorism, the drug trade, and organized crime.
 
Mike Williams retired from service in July of 2014 as the appointed Director of Patrol and Enforcement, where his commitment to reducing and preventing crime involved managing a budget of more than $100 million and the 1000-plus sworn patrol officers who protect our great city every day.
 
On Tuesday, May 19, 2015 Mike Williams was elected Sheriff, the fifth since consolidation of the city of Jacksonville and county of Duval. He took the oath of office on July 1, 2015 for a four year term, and pledged to focus on three things:
 
  • Reducing violent crime: Both long term strategies and short term strategies will be developed and implemented. Achieving and sustaining crime reductions require resources; planning; and excellent tactics, and is directly impacted by these other two priorities
  • Driving LEAN Efficiencies:  Being successful means being smart and innovative, while being fiscally responsible and measuring efficacy, processes and outcomes. We are committed to continuously improving.
  • Citizen engagement. Being effective means citizens have many ways to connect with the men and women of the agency and get to know the officers who serve their neighborhood: From monthly Sheriff’s Watch meetings to Lt.’s Walks, and communicating online via Nextdoor.com, active engagement with stakeholders is the best way to be successful.
