In November of 2010 Florida’s 1st District Court of Appeals closed the Response to Resistance Board Meetings of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, as a result of a lawsuit by the Fraternal Order of Police. They could no longer be publicly noticed nor could the public attend the meetings.

The information about concluded cases is being offered to the public in the interest of remaining transparent to the community we serve. Links to these cases can be found below. (As board hearings are concluded, and the Sheriff's recommendations are made, these summaries will be redacted and added to this page.)

In matters of officers' use of force there is a multi-level process for investigating these cases. All cases are investigated by the State Attorney's Office. This is a criminal investigation. Independent of that investigation, detectives of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office also participate in the criminal investigation.  The result of this investigation is used administratively.

Next, the administrative process begins. This is a comprehensive investigation, conducted by experts, to determine if the officer acted within training and policy guidelines. If the findings result in a determination that policy was violated the board may include in its recommendations a review by Internal Affairs, for possible disciplinary action.

Citizens who seek redress can contact the United States Commission on Civil Rights or the United States Department of Justice, Community Relations Service, as well as Civil Court claims.
