The Auto Theft Unit is under the command of the Auto Crimes Lieutenant. It is staffed by one sergeant, four detectives and one secretary. The unit also investigates thefts of marine craft, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and aircraft.

The unit places emphasis on investigations involving chop shops with multiple thefts and multiple offenders. The unit also works closely with the U.S. Customs Service and the National Insurance Crime Bureau to prevent import and export of stolen vehicles from Jacksonville's ports.

As stated on page 33 of the 2015 Department of Investigations and Homeland Security Departmental Report: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Unit’s clearance rate for 2015 was 18.67%. The 2012 (latest available at time of publication) national average clearance rate was 7.8% for cities in the same population group as Jacksonville. The number of auto theft cases increased by 22.07% from 1876 cases in 2014 to 2290 cases in 2015.

Ways to assist in the reduction of auto theft:

  • Park in a well-lighted area.
  • Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the keys in the ignition.
  • Lock your vehicle even in front of your home.
  • Use an anti-theft deterrent device.

Ways to assist if your vehicle is stolen:

  • Know or record your tag and vehicle identification number.
  • Know or record your insurance information.
