The Gang Investigations Unit is responsible for gathering intelligence and developing and implementing enforcement strategies that target gang activity. A Special Agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also assigned to the unit on a full time basis. The unit is part of the FBI Violent Crime / Anti-Gang Task Force. 

Members of the unit provide covert surveillance, work investigations that are unique such as: serial type crimes, organized crime, offenses that require undercover work, and criminal street gang investigations. The unit also provides arrest services of suspects who are known to be violent or have a tendency to flee. 

The Gang Investigations Unit detectives coordinate closely with the Narcotics/Organized Crime Unit, the Aggravated Battery Unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation , the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and  the Florida Department of Corrections on investigations involving possible street gang activity.
