On Friday, March 1, 2013, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) announced the launch of a city wide awareness campaign among motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists to reduce the amount of crashes and fatalities occurring on our roadways.

Traffic Statistics

  • In Jacksonville, traffic fatalities increased from 132 in 2014 to 152 in 2015.
  • Crashes with fatalities involving a pedestrian have increased throughout the past five years. In 2014, there were 36 compared to 2015 where there were 43 crashes of this type.
  • In 2015, 46% (12 out of 26) of the individuals that died in motorcycle crashes were not wearing a helmet.
  • Motor Vehicle vs. Bicyclist fatalities are also a concern. Many bicyclists continue to ride while impaired and some don’t follow the rules of the road.
  • The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office realizes that changing behavior in traffic is a long term process. That is why we continue to apply for traffic related grants that afford us an opportunity to educate and enforce, using officers off-duty (overtime compensated through the grant) whenever possible.
