April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April 09, 2019
On Wednesday, April 3rd, Sheriff Mike Williams and members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Special Assault Unit joined Mayor Lenny Curry, State Attorney Melissa Nelson, local law enforcement partners and the staff from the Women’s Center
at City Hall to recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Abuse can come in many forms including: abuse by a family member, or acquaintance; abuse at an institution; child pornography; commercial sexual exploitation; and trafficking for sex purposes. Sexual violence and abuse has the potential to cause devastating consequences for the survivors.

“Please help us spread the word and help us empower these victims to use their voice to come forward and talk to police. If you aren’t the victim, but you know of someone who is, please encourage them to report the crime and to seek professional help,” said Sheriff Mike Williams, “Our goal is to not only get the perpetrator off of the streets, but to get help for the victim, so that they can start the healing process.”

In the past year, JSO has increased its Victim Advocacy Program from three advocates to seven showing the Sheriff’s ongoing commitment to the community.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office encourages victims of sexual crimes to use their voice and to come forward and talk to police. If you are a victim or know of someone who is being victimized please call 904.630.0500 to report it. If it is an emergency please call 9-1-1 (TTY Services Available).

If you have questions about sexual abuse and would like to speak directly with a Special Assault detective please call 904.630.2168.
